“Cloud services” is a term for a wide range of cloud solutions that companies and customers can get on demand over the internet through cloud computing.
Apps and resources on demand, without the hardware.
Some popular cloud services include:
These cloud solutions make it easy and cost effective to get to apps and resources, without having to set up infrastructure or hardware on your own. Most employees use cloud services every day at work, whether they realise it or not. For example, they might check their email or work together on a document using cloud-based applications.
Cloud computing vendors and service providers take care of everything about cloud services, from infrastructure to security. Customers can access these cloud solutions from the providers’ servers, so a business doesn’t have to host applications on its own servers, reducing costs and maintenance efforts.
Data is the backbone of any modern business. Storing information safely and securely is more important than ever before, especially since the introduction of regulations like the POPI Act in South Africa and GDPR in the EU. But with remote and hybrid work becoming ever more prominent, on-premises solutions are no longer meeting the data storage needs of companies around the world. Hard drives are unreliable, while procuring and maintaining your own servers is both an expensive process and a complicated one which most companies don’t have the resources to manage.
So where should companies turn for their infrastructure, software and storage solutions? To the cloud. While the thought of storing all your files and documents online may seem like a daunting one, there are countless benefits to using a cloud service. Here are just some advantages of keeping your data in the cloud:
Use and pay for precisely the amount of storage that you need. This means that you’re not paying for unnecessary space, and can always expand or reduce your plan as needed.
Only use the services you need, when you need them without the need for unnecessary expenditure. Simply add or remove services as needed, and reduce maintenance costs.
Whether you’re a small organisation with basic storage requirements, or part of a global chain whose needs exceed the norm, you can access scalable services that can be adjusted to meet your business demands.
The data stored in each service on cloud platforms can be accessed by those who need it from anywhere in the world, as long as they have internet access, allowing for seamless collaboration.

Learn more →Cloud hosting moves the infrastructure your business runs on (servers, memory, processing power and storage) off your premises and onto a Virtual Private Server (VPS) that Solid Systems sets up, manages and maintains. Your software, apps and data stay securely accessible from any device, anywhere, and you no longer rely on a single physical server in your office.
You choose the memory, CPU and disk space you need, and upgrade them as your business grows. Because your VPS is separate from your own devices, it is also a safe place to test new apps and systems without disrupting your work. Our cloud hosting services run on local, independent servers, which gives us control over the resources available: SSD drives and no overselling. Your data sits on interconnected servers, so your services stay online if a single server fails.
Not sure whether cloud hosting or a Microsoft Azure virtual machine suits your workloads better? Book your IT consultation and we’ll compare them with you.
A cloud backup is a copy of your data stored in the cloud as a failsafe against hardware failure, natural disaster, human error, data breaches and load shedding. It is not the same as cloud storage: storage lets your teams work with their files online, while a backup keeps a separate copy on another server, so you can restore a single file or an entire server when something goes wrong.
Solid Systems’ cloud backup covers anything from one workstation to a whole server. After the first backup, only the changes to your files are uploaded, so backups run faster and restores are quicker. With hybrid storage you can keep a copy on-premises as well, for faster restores. Your data is stored in secure data centres with end-to-end encryption, backup and recovery come as one service, and you pay per device, so your monthly fee never changes without you knowing.
Many businesses assume that because their email and files live in Microsoft 365, they are automatically backed up. They aren’t, in the way most people expect: deleted items only stay in the recycle bin for a limited time, and once something has been permanently deleted there is very little Microsoft can do to bring it back.
A Microsoft 365 backup from Solid Systems keeps a separate copy of your email, SharePoint sites and OneDrive files, so you can restore what was lost, even after it has left the recycle bin. It covers the gaps when retention policies change or aren’t maintained, protects your data from ransomware and from former employees or contractors who still have access, and keeps everything safe while you migrate. With POPIA and GDPR in mind, it also helps you avoid the penalties and lost trust that a data loss can bring.
Disaster recovery (DR) is the restoration of an entire IT system: hardware, cloud servers, virtual machines, applications and databases. Backups of critical data and applications are stored in the cloud so that, should a failure occur, the whole system can be restored. Storing data in the cloud is not foolproof on its own, because power and internet outages, cyberattacks and data breaches can still interrupt your business. That is why every business needs a disaster recovery plan.
A DR plan sets out what your IT team does to recover data and applications after a problem, and how data is backed up and stored beforehand, for example at a secondary DR site. We put it together with you around three questions: how often you need to back up, how long you can run without each application, and which business-critical applications must be restored first. Book your IT consultation to review your recovery plan.
Moving to the cloud is not something to announce on a Monday and hope for the best. A cloud migration strategy moves your apps, infrastructure and data across in a structured way, with the systems your operations depend on going first, so downtime stays low and problems like duplicated data and incompatibility are avoided. The right approach depends on what you’re moving: rehost systems as they are, optimise them for the cloud, replace them with cloud-based software, rebuild them, keep some on-premises in a hybrid setup, or retire what no longer serves you.
Our cloud migration services follow three steps. We assess your existing environment: the services and software you use, how they are configured and integrated, and which migrations come first. Our IT pros then move your databases, servers and apps with proven tools, scheduled for the least disruption. Finally, we optimise the new environment so you see the benefits in practice. Our cloud migration checklist walks you through the planning.
Cloud VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a digital phone system that manages and routes your business’s incoming and outgoing calls. It works much like a physical PBX, but Solid Systems runs it virtually, so there is no PBX server to buy, house or maintain, and calls are billed per second. Your customers won’t notice the difference, wherever your staff are working.
Your people can use a handset, an app on their phone or a web-based phone, and take and transfer calls as normal from anywhere. Load shedding or a hardware fault in the office matters less: as long as staff are online, calls carry on, and every call is encrypted. You keep the features of a traditional phone system, including a voice menu, call recording, office hours and forwarding rules, direct numbers, call queues, ring groups, voicemail to email and conference calling. You can also keep your existing number by porting it to us.
With so many cloud services available, each built for different needs and industries, it is hard to know which are right for your business. Cloud consulting gives you an experienced partner to find the services that add the most value, plan how they fit together and help you implement them, from the migration itself to looking after the services and training your teams.
Solid Systems’ cloud consultants advise on cloud storage, cloud hosting, cloud migration, cloud backup, disaster recovery planning, cloud phone systems and Microsoft 365. We have moved our own business to the cloud and to remote working, and have helped businesses across South Africa and abroad do the same since 2003. Rather than having your own servers and hard drives dedicated to the storage of vital documentation, which can be a costly and unreliable solution if they aren’t maintained correctly, businesses can use the cloud computing services offered by third-party providers. A cloud services provider maintains their own servers, and ensures the security of all data stored on their infrastructure, and you simply pay for the space that you need. This makes cloud as a service an affordable, secure and accessible solution for companies in South Africa and around the world. Cloud services come in a variety of different forms to suit your needs as a business:
Rather than buying server hardware and maintaining it yourself, cloud computing service providers offer solutions for development, networking and storage infrastructure, and maintain them on your behalf, leaving you free to concentrate on your business without having to worry about the hardware behind it.
Give your developers a structure that they can use to create personalised apps. Platforms like Microsoft Azure provide servers for development, allowing you to maintain control of your developed applications, while they maintain and control the servers themselves.
SaaS are online tools for companies to use, often without the need for downloading or installing applications, but accessible from a web browser. These tools, like the email services of Microsoft 365, are often managed by many a cloud service company in South Africa and around the world.
Cloud services have been growing in popularity across the globe, but they have been on the rise in South Africa in particular, partly because of the rampant power crisis that the country has experienced. Outages like load-shedding make it difficult for businesses to get servers on-premise to work efficiently, and hardware also becomes more prone to disaster thanks to the surges when power returns.
This makes cloud services an ideal solution within Johannesburg, Cape Town, and across South Africa, with many businesses partnering with their preferred cloud services company and investing in both private and public cloud services. While private cloud services are limited to one organisation, public cloud services are shared between organisations, allowing the fees associated with them to be shared as well.

While we looked at 3 types of cloud services above, there are actually 4 types of cloud computing solutions. These are: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) and Function as a Service (FaaS).
Because FaaS solutions are generally used by developers for coding purposes, we find that this is a service that most SME businesses don’t need.
One of the main uses for cloud solutions is storing files and data online rather than on-premises. In many ways this makes it more secure, while still remaining accessible. You can ensure that the right people will have the access that they need, no matter where they are in the world and no matter which device they may be using.
Cloud services are online based, which means that they can be accessed from anywhere in the world. This makes cloud solutions ideal for businesses that are embracing remote and hybrid work environments, since your teams don’t need to be on-premises in your office to access the files and data that they need to work efficiently.
Microsoft 365 is a perfect example of cloud computing. It’s a range of different products and solutions, including Microsoft Office, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint, which all come together to provide businesses with cloud solutions that give their humans access to all of the files, data and apps that they need to be productive and efficient in everything that they do.
We could talk all day about the benefits of using a cloud service! But there are four main advantages that are seeing companies around the world migrating to the cloud: cost-effectiveness, on-demand services, scalability and availability.
As more and more businesses are embracing cloud computing, the availability, affordability and variety of cloud services on offer are increasing. This makes it easier than ever for businesses around the world to adopt cloud services, and ensures that cloud services will be around for many years to come.
You can run a wide range of web and database servers, apps and services on cloud hosting, including Pastel Partner, Sage VIP, QuickBooks and Syspro.
Cloud storage lets you keep and access your digitised data and documents online. Cloud backup keeps a copy of them on a separate server, so that if something happens to your data, you won’t lose critical information.
Most of the companies that work with us keep their backups for 28 days, but you can configure your storage to keep data for as long as you need. Monthly snapshots preserve older data without counting towards your quota, and are only charged for when you restore from them.
It depends on your Recovery Point Objective (RPO): the amount of data your business can afford to lose before the damage is significant. Backing up constantly to several locations strains your hardware and costs a great deal, so most companies back up on a weekly or monthly schedule set by their RPO.
You keep it. Whether you use Telkom or another VoIP provider, your number is ported to us, and if you’re switching from Telkom you can keep the number without paying for a Telkom line.
Cloud VoIP needs very little bandwidth, so as long as you have reliable internet connectivity it works well. The more people share the same connection, the more bandwidth you’ll need.
